Song fragments:
The selections below cannot be considered bona fide "songs" in the Jawbreaker canon; for the most part, they were impromptu jams or song quotations during live shows, and as such, recordings of these tunes are fragmentary in nature. Regardless, these events deserve to be documented in some fashion.
Look out, mama, there’s a white boat coming up the river
Note: Unreleased, and from the 5 Aug. 1990 show. While Chris changes a broken string, Blake says, "I could do a Neil Young tune a capella!" Blake starts singing the first verse as reproduced above, and accompanies himself on guitar; Chris and Adam soon join in, but the seemingly improvised performance of the song comes to a halt after a mere twenty seconds.
with a big red beacon, and a flag, and a man on the rail.
I think you’d better call John, ’cause it don’t look like they’re here to deliver
the mail.
Got your letter. I just put it down.
Note: Unreleased, and from the 7 Dec. 1991 show. Before the show begins, Blake strums a riff on his guitar and sings the above words over it; he abruptly stops and says, "No, that's not it. I'm just killing time 'cause the other guys split." The tune lasts for about twenty seconds. It is unclear whether this is part of an unreleased Jawbreaker song, a cover tune, or a total improvisation on Blake's part. Since the guitar riff sounds fairly well-developed, the former two seem more likely.
Try to pull the cap from my pen.
